Our History
Chambers of Commerce have long recognized the value of employee benefits, and the difficulties smaller employers face in obtaining quality, affordable coverage.
Individual Chambers began offering group insurance in the early 1940s. Then in 1970 the Chambers of Commerce developed the base Plan. Premiums and experience were pooled across Canada to create an employee group comparable to that of a large company. This plan provided
life insurance,
accidental death and dismemberment benefits, and a
monthly disability income benefit.
Chambers of Commerce were committed to keeping the Plan competitive and contemporary and, by 1980, a number of new benefits had been added. These included
dependent group life insurance,
extended health benefits and
dental expense benefits. A
group registered retirement savings plan and
employee assistance program were added in 1991 and 1993 respectively.
In 1997,
business overhead benefits became available, paying items like rent, leases and telephone bills for owners who become disabled. In 2000 new optional life coverages took effect, allowing employees to select and pay for well-priced life insurance benefits, independent of the employer’s benefit selections for the group. The Plan also launched its first
critical illness coverages. These very contemporary benefits pay insured employees a lump sum if they are subsequently diagnosed with any one of a number of significant health problems.
Currently the
Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan® offers up to 17 choices of
health plans and 32 choices of
dental plans, which provide coverage to age 75 for those still working.
Underlying every change has been the philosophy that has driven the Plan since its inception - that of providing affordable, competitive, secure benefits to employees of small firms.
